About Us
The Foundation pays homage to the late Ian and Shirley Norman, who worked tirelessly to successfully establish the retail business of Norman Ross followed by Harvey Norman. The family is very proud of their parents’ work and charitable giving and now, with the generous support of the three Norman children, Karen, Tracy, and Glen, the Foundation has been set up to continue their parents’ substantial philanthropic efforts.
The Ian & Shirley Norman Foundation will provide support to projects that focus on:
- Pillar 1 – Being Ecologically Sound
- Pillar 2 – Protecting People from Harm
- Pillar 3 – Walking Together with Traditional Custodians
- Pillar 4 – Empowering Communities

We don’t just donate. The Ian & Shirley Norman Foundation has been set up with a long-term funding view that backs innovation, is comfortable with risk and empowers communities to take on the challenges of our time.

• Approximately nine lives are lost to suicide every day in Australia.
• 50-60 percent of people with a mental illness DO NOT seek professional help, largely due to the stigma surrounding mental health.

Last year, the Ian and Shirley Norman Foundation (ISNF) funded Food Ladder to install a glasshouse at Central Yorke School (CYS) in South Australia. Earlier this month our CEO, Coralie Nichols, was lucky enough to visit the site as part of their NAIDOC Week celebrations and the opening of the glasshouse. Here is what Coralie had to say about her visit...
"It was a really joyful day, including CYS’s very first smoking ceremony. The students and the teachers are thrilled with the glasshouse – it is currently fast-tracking the vegetable garden growth. They can transfer tomato plants grown from seedlings in a matter of weeks into their vegetable garden from the glasshouse. They are also subsiding their canteen – lettuce in Central Yorke cost $6 – they are now growing their own lettuce from seedlings in the glasshouse. They also have a Year 12 student studying Agriculture using the glasshouse for his practical work (30% of his mark) and he is now considering a career in hydroponics plants and market gardens. The school managed to assemble a second-hand commercial kitchen (from a school that closed in the region) and has installed it in a demountable next to the glasshouse to operate their home economics classes – they are so enterprising. A number of children showed me around the glasshouse, and they are really proud – we also shared a meal together. It was great to hear from the Principal and Deputy Principal about the difference the glasshouse has made to the students at CYS. The students were really happy ISNF visited them. It was great to see how ISNF funding makes a difference on the ground."
