About Us
The Foundation pays homage to the late Ian and Shirley Norman, who worked tirelessly to successfully establish the retail business of Norman Ross followed by Harvey Norman. The family is very proud of their parents’ work and charitable giving and now, with the generous support of the three Norman children, Karen, Tracy, and Glen, the Foundation has been set up to continue their parents’ substantial philanthropic efforts.
The Ian & Shirley Norman Foundation will provide support to projects that focus on:
- Pillar 1 – Being Ecologically Sound
- Pillar 2 – Protecting People from Harm
- Pillar 3 – Walking Together with Traditional Custodians
- Pillar 4 – Empowering Communities
&
We don’t just donate. The Ian & Shirley Norman Foundation has been set up with a long-term funding view that backs innovation, is comfortable with risk and empowers communities to take on the challenges of our time.

At ISNF, we mean it when we say “we live by our values”. One of which is FAMILY 💜
Everyone is very excited to have 5 month old Kaia in the office today. Here she is helping her Mum Jemma, our Governance & Operations Coordinator, with some Board updates.
Family is important and sometimes collides with work commitments but we pride ourselves on being flexible and accommodating for our extended ISNF Family 💜

• Tracy Norman - Founder and Chair of the Ian and Shirley Norman Foundation
• Sue Prosser - Soul Hub Newcastle
• Fiona Pelling - Cowboys Community Foundation
• Jo Taylor - Siddle Family Foundation
• Geraldine Campbell - Waratah Education Foundation
• Annette Brodie - The Reconnect Project
• Hannah Andrevski - Roundabout Canberra

• Lauretta Morton OAM - Newcastle Art Gallery Director
• Suzanne Smith - author and journalist,
• Barabara Fitzgerald - education consultant and
• Kathleen McPhillips - sociologist with the The University of Newcastle, Australia

We enjoyed a conference dinner at Peibri Place with Tracey Spicer AM GAICD – Australian newsreader, Walkley Award-winning journalist and social justice advocate - providing the keynote address. We also attended an International Women’s Day morning tea with Nuatali Nelmes - Lord Mayor of Newcastle where our CEO Coralie Nichols was the keynote speaker.

Today marks the final day of the technical skills component for our first Mobile Device Repair Trainees. Over the past 6 weeks, this group of 5 enthusiastic young people have been introduced to basic electronics and soldering, principles of work health & safety, toured an e-waste facility, learnt safe handling of lithium batteries and how to securely erase devices using Blancco software, and the steps involved for mobile phone repairs.
Our Subject Matter Expert, Andy from FMA Parts, has been exceptional in guiding the trainees through the process of a mobile phone 'teardown' (that's tech speak for pulling the whole thing apart) and identifying every tiny screw, small component and the specific tools required for each step.
After a 2 week break, our trainees will be back for the next phase of learning: working in a repair shop alongside colleagues, customer service and retail operations.
The training program has only been made possible because our amazing funders could see the long term social value in investing in our pilot. Thank you to the philanthropy of the Ian & Shirley Norman Foundation, Impact100 Sydney and The Ian Potter Foundation.
PS - it's Neurodiversity Celebration Week this week - and we are certainly celebrating the talents of the neurodivergent young people we support, teach and employ!
