We are so humbled by this extremely generous donation to help us collect all Great Barrier Reef coral species before it’s too late. We have not only found ourselves an incredible sponsor and supporter, but some new friends as well that believe in our project and mission and of course have a shared love for our beautiful Great Barrier Reef. We are excited beyond belief to work with the team at the Ian & Shirley Norman Foundation and are proud beyond words to work in partnership with them.
We are deeply grateful for this $500,000 donation, which will play a crucial role in our mission to collect and preserve as many of the 415 known hard coral species on the Great Barrier Reef before 2026. The reef has endured five mass coral bleaching events in just eight years, highlighting the urgent need for action. Our beautiful reef is under severe stress, and the Forever Reef Project is dedicated to safeguarding and sustaining its incredible biodiversity. With each bleaching event, we lose some of the most vulnerable corals and reefs, making our work more critical than ever. Together, we must act swiftly to protect this vital ecosystem before it’s too late.
A not-for-profit organisation, Great Barrier Reef Legacy was created to address the urgent need to secure the long-term survival of the Great Barrier Reef and coral reefs world-wide.
We deliver ground-breaking projects, innovative research and inspiring educational content to engage the public, support science and accelerate actions vital to the preservation of coral reefs.
Built on over 35 years of expedition, tourism, multimedia and research experience on the Great Barrier Reef, our team has extensive knowledge of the reef, and is comprised of dedicated and skilled volunteers with an unwavering commitment to protecting our reefs.
Our flagship Forever Reef Project ‘s aim is to preserve the genetic biodiversity of all coral species across the world, starting with the Great Barrier Reef. We will collect, catalogue, and store living fragments and genetic samples in a state-of-the-art holding facility. Acting as a ‘coral ark’, The Forever Reef Project will maintain the living biodiversity of corals before they are lost to us and future generations.
This repository of live fragments and genetic material can be used to aid in global reef research and restoration efforts.
