The Ian & Shirley Norman Foundation is providing funding for the development of the Raising Rarity School Outreach program. This funding means we will be able to engage several schools to develop and evaluate an effective and meaningful outreach program focused on students in Primary and Secondary educational settings. The outreach program will enable students across Victoria to engage directly in the conservation of Victorian threatened species. Students contribute to science through collaboration with conservation and horticultural experts from the Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria. Students’ direct action will help to protect Victoria’s threatened flora

Conservation as a specialist discipline has largely failed. The future lies in a more holistic approach that reaches and draws upon all parts of the community. Essentially, conservation needs to be democratised and have actions from everyone, not just a select few specialists.

This year I hope we can get heaps of schools to grow seeds so we can make a difference and make these flowers popular again while getting some great learning. I love that we were the first school to participate in this and I hope we get to do better this year.

Background and Purpose

Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria (RBGV) is one of the world’s leading botanic gardens and a centre of excellence for conservation horticulture, science, learning and engagement. It is dedicated to safeguarding plants and our places for the wellbeing of people and the planet and embraces its place at the nexus of nature, culture and science. RBGV’s vision is a healthy planet and flourishing community sustained and enriched by plants. Central to this vision of a healthy planet and flourishing community is diversity – biodiversity and cultural diversity – and the urgent need to protect and enhance this diversity as we face the challenges of a changing climate.

Raising Rarity is a dynamic, interdisciplinary project that unites the expertise of our science, horticulture, and learning teams to conserve and manage rare and critically endangered plant species facing imminent extinction. By leading hands-on conservation initiatives and offering direct support to schools, local councils, and regional botanic gardens, we aim to build capacity and foster a collective responsibility for safeguarding Victoria’s threatened plant species. Our mission is to empower communities to take action from the ground up, ensuring a shared vision for protecting our state’s unique botanical heritage.
