About Biraban

Biraban Local Aboriginal Land Council (LALC) seeks to build, strengthen and maintain local, regional and international partnerships with government and non-government organisations. They contribute to a positive and sustainable future for the local Aboriginal community through employment, tourism, education, training, workshops, environmental conservation, community events and culture and heritage conservation.

Under the Aboriginal Land Rights Act, Local Aboriginal Land Councils have the ability to acquire land via the land claims process which was established to help compensate Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islander Peoples for the loss of their traditional lands. The only land available for claim under this process is unused crown land. In many instances it is land zoned for environmental conservation and actually costs the Land Council to maintain (e.g. fencing, access gates, the maintenance of asset protection zones, removal of illegally dumped rubbish etc).
